CHI '97 Workshop: Speech User Interface Design Challenges

Susan Boyce, AT&T: Susan Boyce is a Senior Technical Staff Member at AT&T in Holmdel New Jersey. During the seven years that Susan has worked at AT&T she has had responsibility for user interface design of Network Management Systems, Service Creation Environments, and Speech Recognition Interfaces for consumer services. For the past four years Susan has been conducting forward looking research on user interface design and consumer acceptance of speech recognition technology. Susan has published articles in the general area of human factors and has presented papers at a number of scientific conferences. Susan served as one of the organizers for the CHI96 workshop on speech recognition. She has published many internal reports on the topic of speech recognition and planned and chaired several internal AT&T events on the topic of speech recognition.

Demetrios Karis, GTE Laboratories: Demetrios Karis is a principal member of technical staff at GTE Laboratories. During his eight years at GTE, he has worked on a variety of new services and products that involve speech-based user interfaces as well as carrying out a number of applied research projects. During this time he has visited and had extensive contacts with almost a dozen of the major speech recognition vendors. He has published several papers on the design of speech recognition systems, human conversational behavior, and user-interface design, as well as presenting tutorials on speech recognition within GTE. He attended the INTERCHI '93 Research Symposium and the CHI'94 Workshop on the Future of Speech and Audio in the Interface, and was one of the organizers of the CHI'96 workshop on speech recognition. He has served as a CHI paper reviewer, is also active in the Human Factors and Ergonomics Society, and has frequently presented papers and served as a reviewer for that organization.

Amir Mane, AT&T: Amir Mane is a Senior Technical Staff Member at AT&T in Holmdel New Jersey. During his tenure in Bell laboratories he designed Operation Support Systems, interfaces for Video Mediated Communication in CSCW, and Speech Based interfaces for telecommunication services. Amir has published several reviewed articles and book chapters, and has presented papers at a number of scientific conferences, including several meetings of the Human Factors and Ergonomics Society.

Nicole Yankelovich, Sun Microsystems Laboratories: Nicole Yankelovich is currently Co-Principal Investigator of the Speech Applications project at Sun Microsystems Laboratories (SML) in Chelmsford, MA. In addition to project management responsibilities, she specializes in designing speech user interfaces. She has been responsible for the design and testing of the speech interfaces for six applications within the SpeechActs environment created at SML. Nicole has published numerous papers on user interface design, speech applications, and hypertext, and she has served on the organizing and program committees of conferences such as CHI, UIST, CSCW, Hypertext, Multimedia, and ASSETS.
