Technical Notes

This year we are experimenting with a new form of submission, Technical Notes. These are two-page reports of new research directions or findings, new technologies or practices, or tightly-argued essays or opinion pieces. They should be of archival quality in that they describe a significant idea or direction for others to build upon. Technical Notes need not describe in full detail the procedures or methodology used in the work, but can provide this information by reference. Full literature searches are not expected, although relevant citations should be included. Technical notes are also the acceptable format for formulated, but untested ideas, that have a sound and well-presented rationale. We especially encourage work that provides a basis for the next 50 years of HCI research. Examples might be:

Review Process

Submissions will be reviewed by a group of 5-8 reviewers selected from a volunteer reviewing base of 300 HCI professionals. Reviewing will be blind, reviewers will not know who wrote the paper. Reviewer assignment will be done by matching based on keyword assignments. Review criteria include: originality, importance and generality of contribution, soundness of rationale or demonstration, and quality of written presentation.

Format

A total of 10 copies of the submission are required. To support the blind review process 8 copies should be submitted with all names and affiliations of authors blanked out. In other respects the format is identical to the standard conference proceedings format.

Technical Notes may be no longer than 2 pages in the Conference Proceedings format, including references and figures. The goal of these short papers is to provide a short, concise report of work that is less extensive than that reported in the long papers, but that is judged to be important and likely to have high impact on the CHI community.

Upon Acceptance

Authors will be notified of acceptance or rejection by mid-November 1996.

Accepted submissions will be published in the CHI 97 Conference Proceedings and the CHI 97 Electronic Publication. The primary author of each accepted submission will receive an Author Kit with detailed instructions on how to submit both the camera-ready copy version and the electronic copy of the paper. These materials are due on 15 December 1996. In addition, presenters will be encouraged to prepare an interactive version of their material, e.g., an interactive poster or demonstration, to share with conference attendees.

At the Conference

Each accepted Technical Note will have around ten minutes for formal presentation, with a brief question period.

Submissions

  1. Your submission must be in English, and should be previously unpublished.
  2. Electronic and fax submissions are not accepted.
  3. Submissions which arrive after the deadline will not be considered.
  4. Only one copy of the submission should include your name and affiliation.
  5. Your submission should contain no proprietary or confidential material and should cite no proprietary or confidential publications.
  6. Responsibility for permissions to use video, audio or pictures of identifiable people rests with you, not CHI97.
  7. If your submission is accepted, it will not be published without copyright release forms signed by the first-listed author or a representative of the first author's institution.
  8. We strongly suggest the use of express mail or a courier service, for speedy delivery. Customs labels should bear the words "Educational materials with no commercial value."
