As we look to the future of HCI, one of our goals must be to continue to develop HCI as a field by reaching out to professionals within HCI or related disciplines who usually do not have the opportunity to share their work and their experiences with their colleagues at the CHI conference. To achieve this goal, ACM/SIGCHI has created the HCI Development Consortium to encourage the interaction between them and the traditional CHI community. Each year, the SIGCHI Executive Committee, in association with the conference committee, will select a specific community which would benefit the field of HCI by promoting their involvement at the CHI conference.
CHI 97 and the SIGCHI EC would like to solicit submissions from our HCI colleagues in countries which have a demonstrable lack of hard currency, such as Eastern Europe, to the CHI 97 HCI Development Consortium. The consortium has the following objectives:
- to provide a setting for discussions on participant's research, practice, and experience, as well as the particular issues and challenges facing HCI in their community
- to develop a supportive community of scholars and a spirit of collaborative research
- to contribute to the conference goals through interaction with other HCI professionals and conference events.
The consortium will be conducted in a workshop format. The Consortium takes place over the two days preceding the main conference, beginning on Saturday evening with a welcome reception and continuing until Monday evening.
Participants in the Consortium receive complimentary conference registration, partial travel reimbursement, and access to reduced cost hotel accommodations.
Review Process
The CHI 97 HCI Development Consortium organizing committee will select participants on the basis of their anticipated contribution to the Consortium goals. We look forward to adiverse group of participants who can discuss the state and issues around HCI research and practice in Eastern Europe, their professional environment, and can relate their experiences at the CHI conference back to their colleagues within their community.
