CHIkids: The Next Generation Interface with Technology

CHIkids rolls childcare, summer camp, technology, and CHI into an exciting learning experience for children. This is an opportunity for the next generation to explore computers, technology, and user interface design at the CHI 97 conference. Four areas of exploration will be created especially for children (3-12 years of age). They will have the opportunity to create multimedia stories, try the latest educational multimedia titles, test emerging software technologies with CHI researchers, and to be conference reporters using desktop publishing tools and the World Wide Web. CHIkids needs your participation!

To get a flavor for what CHIkids was like at CHI96 look at the:

Participation

Individuals, educational organizations, and companies that would like to focus on projects that involve kids in innovative educational technological experiences are encouraged to submit short proposals in the following areas:

Technology Workouts

This area offers the opportunity for new technologies and user interfaces to be tested with children of all ages. Four, one-hour time-slots will be available each day in the afternoon, for the five days of the CHI conference for CHI researchers to bring their work to be used with children. Submit a two-page summary of your work which includes authors' contact information, technology summary, the number of one-hour time-slots you are interested in (you can choose multiple one-hour lots on one day, or on multiple days), the hardware/software you will bring, and the hardware/software you might require.

CD-ROM Field Trips

This area offers children the opportunity to explore various CD-ROM products. Multimedia CD-ROM authors are asked to submit their products to be used by children each morning throughout the five days of CHI 97. Submit a one-page summary describing the product(s) you would like to lend to this area. Multiple CD-ROM submissions will be welcomed. Authors do not have to be present at CHIkids during the conference to submit a CD-ROM product. However, daily volunteers to work with children will be most welcome!

Multimedia Storytelling/CHIkids Newsroom

These areas will offer older children (7 years and up) the opportunity to be authors of their own multimedia experiences. CHI experts in multimedia authoring and/ordesktop publishing will be needed daily to work with CHIkids on projects ranging from creating a CHIkids conference newsletter, to creating their first multimedia story. If you are interested in volunteering to be a CHIkids Leader in Multimedia Storytelling or the CHIkids Newsroom, please submit a one-page summary which includes your contact information, your experience (if any) working with children, what CHIkids area you are interested in, and how much time you expect to have to volunteer during the CHI 97 conference.
